The opening period saw both teams feeling each other out, with Desert Vista striking first with the game’s opening shot. However, Mesa responded quickly, using its defense to disrupt Desert Vista’s offensive flow. Both teams engaged in a back-and-forth exchange, with strong defense from both sides preventing either team from establishing a dominant rhythm. Mesa’s defensive intensity stood out, with the team picking up key steals and converting them into easy points. This defensive pressure, coupled with timely offensive contributions from players like #20 John Petersen (Sr.), #2 Jakyi Miles (Fr.), and #24 Daijon Grayson (So.), allowed Mesa to build a small but significant lead, closing the first quarter with a 23-15 advantage.

While Desert Vista’s defense was solid, they were unable to find consistent offensive rhythm, which hurt them as the game progressed. In the second quarter, Mesa continued to capitalize on Desert Vista’s ball-handling errors. Mesa’s #2, Miles,  knocked down the first three-pointer of the quarter, and #24, Grayson, made a crucial steal that almost led to a half-court shot before the buzzer. The period saw Desert Vista struggle to maintain control of the ball, leading to missed opportunities. Mesa’s strong defense and quick breaks were the difference as they entered halftime leading 38-32.

Third Quarter: Desert Vista’s Surge

Coming out of halftime, Desert Vista looked more determined, eager to make up for their troubles in the first half. As the period unfolded, both teams tightened up defensively, but Desert Vista appeared to gain momentum, slowly chipping away at Mesa’s lead. The game became a back-and-forth affair, with each team answering the other’s runs. At one point, Desert Vista even took a brief one-point lead, powered by a strong offensive showing from their key players like #4 Lorenzo “LJ” Diamond (So.). However, Mesa remained composed, and in the final seconds of the quarter, #20 Petersen, hit a crucial shot to reclaim the lead, with the scoreboard reading 54-53 in favor of Mesa as they entered the fourth period.
